AMPATH In-Country Leads

For more than 35 years, AMPATH’s In-Country Leads have been foundational to our model of equitable partnerships. These leaders live full-time in Kenya, Ghana, Nepal or Mexico and focus on building capacity through training, education, and delivering high-quality care.  Many prior In-Country Leads have gone on to take esteemed positions in global health such as director of global health programs or global hearesearch at prestigious academic institutions and community sites.

In-Country Leads are supported by AMPATH Consortium institutions. These include Indiana University (Kenya), NYU Grossman School of Medicine (Ghana), Mount Sinai (Nepal) and University of Texas at Austin (Mexico). In-Country Leads hold faculty or lecturer positions at the hiring AMPATH Consortium institution (ex: assistant clinical professor of medicine) and may also receive faculty/lecturer appointments at the academic institution within the host country.

Examples of some recent leader initiatives include:

  • Mentoring and guiding visiting medical students and residents completing 1–2-month clinical rotations in Kenya

  • Working with faculty in Ghana to establish a maternal fetal medicine unit

  • Guiding successful grant applications with colleagues in Nepal

  • Building a robust year of social service experience for new doctors (pasantes) in Mexico

Job duties vary by location, but include:

  • teaching local and host institution trainees

  • clinical care in your discipline

  • quality improvement projects

  • collaboration with international partners

The In-Country Lead role is a 2-year commitment. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and early expressions of interest are welcome.
